MEET TEC CHAIRS

Biography:

Brian has been running his own Management Contracting and Executive Mentoring business, P.A.C.E Corporation Pty Ltd, since October 1997.  This is the culmination of nearly 30 years of broad business experience on three continents, Africa, Asia and Australia, and in three industries.

Brian began his career in 1969 with Metal Box Central Africa, a multinational packaging products manufacturing group, as a Management Trainee. Brian held positions as Manufacturing Director, and Deputy Managing Director and was transferred to Metal Box Thailand as Managing Director in January 1980.

At the completion of his four years in Bangkok, the family immigrated to Australia, where Brian joined Gadsden Packaging as Manager Strategic Planning.  In January 1985 he was appointed General Manager, Packaging Division, Southern Region.

When Gadsden was taken over by S.A Brewing in 1986, Brian resigned and established P.A.C.E Corporation, specialising in exporting development and providing Management Services to the packaging industry.

A complete change of direction led Brian to NCR Australia where he became General Manager OCC Marketing. An extension of his interest in information technology led to a two-year stint with MITs Limited as General Manager of the Spatial Systems Group, with eventual additional responsibility for The Communications Services Group.

Brian felt a need to return to the manufacturing sector to apply the customer service lessons of the information technology industry and joined DMG Industries Pty Ltd as General Manager. DMG was heavily involved in the automotive industry, being a first tier supplier to Toyota.  In 1996 he joined Mullins Wheels, a family owned operation manufacturing wheels, and automotive accessories, as Managing Director. Brian returned to Melbourne late in 1997 to re-establish P.A.C.E Corporation as a Consulting Practice, specialising in Strategic Planning and Human Capital Management.

Brian has a broad client base and lectures at Monash in their MBA programs. He is Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, an Accredited Member of the National Speakers Association of Australia, a Certified Management Consultant with the Institute of Management Consultants, and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Brian Birley is a FAIM, NSAA-ASM, MIMC-CMC, FAICD.

Personal:

Brian has been married to Marianne since 1971 and has two adult daughters.

The family all live in Melbourne in various locations around the bay.

Brian and Marianne are avid sailors, and they spend much of their time aboard their 55ft powr boat, Sea Gypsy, which is moored at The Anchorage Marina in Williamstown. The rest of their time is spent at their house near paynesville on the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, or travelling overseas.

Brian Birley's TEC Group experience:

Brian has been a TEC Chair since 2000.

Brian had, until 2007, two full TEC groups and two KEY groups.

He currently chairs TEC34, KEY110 and KEY107.

Brian is a TEC Speaker with topics covering Strategic Planning and Implementation and Human Capital management. He completed a two week speaking tour of Vistage groups in Wales, England and Scotland in July 2011.

He has also developed and delivered a number of Chair development programmes for TEC.
